Analysis of basic goals and learning assumptions, methods and technique in urban economics.

Students will be expected to have acquired knowledge necessary for analysis of urban economics and urban management.

Theoretical lectures

1- Basic concepts of urban economics
2- Economies and diseconomies of agglomeration
3- Contemporary processes of urbanization and concentration of population in metropolises
4- Interdependence of economic (GDP per capita) and spatial (net urban area, urban density, location of jobs) indicators of sustainable urban development
5- Interdependence of economic and transport (passenger kilometers by different modes of urban transport) indicators of urban development
6- Interdependence of economic indicators and indicators of sustainable urban development (energy consumption, CO2 emissions, air pollution)
7-Newman-Кеnworthy city typology (urban density): Walking city, Transit city and Automobile city
8- Thomson city typology: Full motorisation, Weak centre strategy, Strong centre strategy, Low cost strategy and Traffic limiting strategy
9- Four stages of urban development (World Bank concept versus contemporary economic and spatial planning approaches)
10- Effect of macroeconomic, regional and local economic instruments (and effect of market) on economic and spatial urban development
11- Different types of urban development - examples of metropolises in USA and Western Europe
12 - Different types of urban development - examples of wealthy asian metropolises, chinese metropolises, and metropolises of developing countries and transition economies
13- Urban development of Belgrade
14- Concept of sustainability from the point of view of economic development: weak, strong and critical sustainability (examples of energy consumption and CO2 emissions)
