Course objective is to provide the basic knowledge about demography, its concept, theories, and methodology. Providing knowledge related to theories from the ancient until modern times. Students should be able to understand the basic principles. Students should be able to understand the basic principles of multidisciplinary character of population science, comparative methods of analysis, and application of relevant statistical patterns and measures in demographic researches.
After passing the course students should be able to perceive and understand basic demographic theories in different historical epoch; to gain knowledge about historical circumstances under which the certain theories are created. Course outcomes are also development of student’s abilities to understand the correlation between population theories and other relevant sciences.
Theoretical lectures
Demography as science of population – basic facts, concepts, relevance. Theory and methodology of demographic research; Population as important element of environment, history and statistical research; Typology; Review of most important demographic thoughts in prehistorical times; Demographic theories in antic period; Demographic theories in Middle ages; Demographic theories connected with period of explorations; Tomas Robert Maltus and his population theory; Marxist theories of population; Thoery of demographic transition; Demographic methods and models; Time component in demography; Demography in multidisciplinary concept; Relevant data sources for demographic research.
Practical lectures
Writing seminar on relevant theoretical views on population development, population optimum and other aspects of multidisciplinary population phenomenon.
