The aim of this course is to introduce students with traditional and contemporary theoretical and methodological approaches, to provide students knowledge of methods and techniques in migration research; to introduce students to observe demographic, economic, social and other determinants of migration phenomenon.
By the end of the course, students will gain a strong understanding of the ways in which contemporary migrations shape and are shaped around the world; In-depth knowledge of international migration theories; Familiarity with the evolution of migration patterns over time. Detailed knowledge about qualitative and quantitative differences in migration patterns around the world.
Theoretical lectures
Introduction & Basic framework, Objective, goals and importance of studying the spatial mobility; Migrant types, migration typologies; Theories of internal and international migration; Terminology, main characteristics and sources; Contemporary methodological approach in analysis of migration phenomenon considering censuses, demographic and migration statistics, and population registers; Methods and techniques in researching the migration scope and flows and net migration; Migration selectivity according to demographic, economic, social and other characteristics; Main migration determinants; Migration and processes of deagrarization, urbanization, social and overall spatial transformation; Historical aspects of population mobility in Balkan Peninsula; The expression ‘’metanastazička kretanja’’ and their causes and consequences; Influence of migration on population origin and composition of population in Balkan.
Practical lectures
Overview of different types of spatial mobility, Methodological guidelines for examine migration patterns from different statistical data sources; Examples of using some methodological procedures in migration research; Review of selected anthropogeographical studies on migration patterns; Methodology of writing the seminar; Presentation of seminar; Visits to statistical and various institutions who are collecting migration data. Visits to IOM and Commissariat for refugees and migration offices.
