To analyse the causal relationships between processes in the social and economic space; to provide knowledge for prediction of the development trajectory and driving forces in economy and society; to introduce scientific concepts of structural elements and relations, functions and organizations of socioeconomic systems.

Students will be able to enhance geographical logic and methods for studying socioeconomic space at local, regional and global level.

Theoretical lectures

(1) Historical development and methodological foundations of socioeconomic geography. (2) Man and space - spatial behaviour of people, spatial interaction, diffusion of innovation, migration. (3) Human settlements - the current state and development perspectives. (4) Economic space - natural conditions and natural resources, primary, secondary, tertiary, quaternary activities - global and regional trends; economic, non-economic and aggregate indicators of development. (5) Social space - spatial distribution of population and regional trends, demographic balance, population growth, population density, data and projections. (6) Cultural space - cultural components, interaction of people and environment, cultural roots, cultural structure and cultural change (innovation, spatial diffusion), interregional contacts. (7-8) Cultural differentiation of space - cultural mosaics, classification and spatial distribution of languages, territoriality and identity, ethnic diversity and separatism, immigration flows, acculturation and assimilation, urban ethnic diversity and segregation, cultural transfer, traditional and popular culture - diversity and uniformity. (9-10) Spatial-functional organization of the settlement - network of settlements, city functions, urban systems, rural systems, urbanization and suburbanization processes. (11-12) Political space - national political systems, international political systems, local and regional political organization of space. (13-15) Spatial planning and sustainable development - environmental issues, economic and social issues; planning and landscaping.
