The aim of the course is to introduce students with the concept of urban geography; to provide students knowledge of urban system theory; to enable students to understand urban hierarchy, functional diversity and development perspectives of urban systems in different world regions.

The module should enable students to gain knowledge about urban settlements; to improve ability to use various research methods in studying urban areas on local, regional and global level; to acquire and apply knowledge of students about different policies.

Theoretical lecture:

(1) History of urban geography. (2) Urban areas and their classification; Typology of urban settlements. (3) Origin of the cities; Development of cities through main historical periods; (4) Concept of urbanization; World urbanization prospects. (5) Urban functions; Functional classification of cities. (6) Spatial organization of cities urban space, models and concepts. (7-8) Functional zones in cities (CBD, residential, industrial, retail, recreational areas etc). (9) Demographic characteristics of urban areas; Circulation in urban areas; Commuting patterns (10) Social topography of cities. (11) Urban morphology (12-13) Process of suburbanization; City region; Types of city regions. (14) Urban hierarchy, functional diversity and development perspectives of urban systems; Urban systems in different world regions. (15) Conurbation; Megalopolis; Megacity; Ecumenopolis.

Practical lectures

Introducing UN-HABITAT platform of urban development and UN Declaration of cities’ commitment to the sustainable development. Sampling of cities with specific patterns (population density, population size, occupation structure etc.). Mapping patterns of settlement network.
