To give a complete mathematical “description” of the Earth in the context of geography (in relation to phenomena and processes on the surface of the Earth).
A student performs independently basic computations regarding the surface of the Earth – determines geographical coordinates, the shortest distances, the sun's height and the length of the day, understands geographical consequences of the Earth's movements, develops the ability of orientation on the surface of the Earth and in the sky, adopts a scientific view of the world, acquires mathematical-geographical knowledge and is able to transfer knowledge to his/her future students.
Theoretical lectures
1) Earth as a celestial body (Earth’s position in the universe, the Solar System); 2) The shape and size of the Earth; 3) Orientation on the Earth (Geographic coordinate system); 4) Celestial sphere; 5-6) Orthodrome and loxodrome; 7-8) Earth’s movements and their geographical consequences; 9) Geographical zones; 10) Moon – Earth; 11) Measurements of time intervals; 12) Gnomonics; 13-14) Solar geometry (determination of daylight duration and moments of sunrise and sunset); 15) Final revision. Attendance verification.
Practical lectures
1) Size, structure, the origin and the future of the universe; 2) The Solar system; 3) Coordinate systems on the celestial sphere; 4) Coordinate systems on the Earth; 5) Revision and assessment of the acquired knowledge: 1st. test; 6) A visit to the National Observatory and Planetarium; 7) Construction of a rotating map of the sky (Star finder); 8) Determining the shortest distances on the Earth; 9) Construction of a horizontal sundial; 10); Revision and assessment of the acquired knowledge: 2nd. test; 11) A visit to the Astronomical Observatory; 12) Determining the Sun’s height and latitude in school conditions; 13-14) Determining of daylight duration; 15) Final revision. Attendance verification.
