The aim of this course is to enable students to understand the concept of landscape at the different scale of spatial planning. Through the introduction of prominent method of landscape characterization at different levels (from regional to local), students will be able to understand the landscape character type, its value and sensitivity as well as its application in planning documents.

The outcome of this course is student’s ability to turn the theoretical knowledge regarding landscape conceptualisation into practise of spatial planning.

Concept, definitions and purpose of the landscape planning. Paradigms in the landscape planning theories. Landscape planning methods. Landscape as a spatial planning framework. Introduction to basic terms: landscape ecology, landscape structure, function and change of the landscape, urban, rural and natural landscape, landscape character - type, landscape characterisation, landscape protection and management, landscape visualization, green infrastructure). Legislation and Guidelines for Landscape: from World Heritage to European Landscape Convention. New techniques for landscape analysis and visualisation (GIS mapping and 3D modelling). Case studies of large scale landscape planning and Environmental and Visual Impact Assessment.
