Through this course students should learn about the basic principles of GIS development, the key GIS components, as well as the basics of modeling, design and application of GIS.

Upon completion of the course, students will be able to understand the essence of GIS, understand and know how to use the data provided in the GIS environment, to form their georeferenced data in a particular GIS environment and to develop new geospatial databases.

Theoretical lectures

1. Introductory considerations of GIS; 2. GIS definitions; 3. The history of GIS development; 4. Theoretical basis and modeling process; 5. Semantic aspects of geodatabase modeling; 6. Geometric aspects of geodatabase modeling and topology; 7. Partial exam; 8. Raster data model; 9. Vector data model; 10. Object-oriented data model; 11. Conventional database models; 12. Geospatial databases; 13. Intelligent databases; 14. Further development of databases; 15. Partial exam.

Practical lectures

1. Introductory review of the GIS software package; 2. Loading existing databases; 3. Getting information about objects on the map; 4. Changing legend elements; 5. Create new databases; 6. Georeferencing; 7. Working with raster images and registration; 8. Working with CAD data; 9. Updating the database (adding columns and rows to existing tables, changing data in tables and calculating); 10. Setting up queries, displaying statistics and summarize tables; 11. Attaching and joining tables; 12. Thematic mapping and selection of classification methods; 13. Defining thematic subgroups and limiting the display based on the scale; 14.-15. Practical exam.
