The goals of this seminar areto understand the changes in family and households both theoretically and empirically and to provide basic and advanced concepts and methods of analysing demography of family and household with an inter-disciplinary perspective.

The course aims to give students competencies in both theoretical and empirical analysis, with an emphasis on the most recent analytical issues and approaches in the field of household and family research. Students will become familiar with issues of definition, measurement and analysis of quantitative and qualitative data.

Theoretical lectures

Basic concepts of household and family demography: household, family, family size, family structures. Theoretical perspectives on household and family change. Agrarian change and family transformation. Family change in the context of modernization and urbanization: demographic transition and second demographic transition. Types of households and families in global and Serbian perspective. Agrarian households. Single households. Single parent family. Cohabiting couples. Family instability in an international and Serbian perspective.Marriage, divorce and remarriage. Implications of household and family change for wellbeing of children. Family change and inter-generational support. Familytransitions and its effects on fertility, mortality and health.

Practical lectures

Verbal and graphical presentation data from national and international sources. Design independent project about main issues of household and family demography. Leadingdiscussions and workshops.
