Geology of Environment (13OZS11O1)

Getting acquainted with the litosphere as a part of the environment, paleoecological changes on the Earth, mineral resources and the consequences of their exploitation.

Application of the acquired knowledge in environmental research.

Theoretical lectures

  1. Getting acquainted with the course content and the obligations of the students frequenting the course.
  2. Inner material, physical properties and chemical composition of the Earth, especially lithosphere;
  3. Age of the Earth, historical geology - stratigraphy, division of the history of the Earth into eras, periods and epochs, determination of the absolute and relative age of the rocks;
  4. Plate tectonics. Classification of lithosphere plates, causes and direction of their movement, possible relationships between plates (collision, subduction ...) as the cause of endodynamic processes and creation of relief. Current examples;
  5. Magma movements and volcanism. Types and arrangement of volcanoes on the Earth as a result of  their geotectonic accommodation, post-vulcanic phenomena.
  6. Tectonic movements (epirogenic and orogenic) as a result of the relationship between lithospheric plates.
  7. Seismic movements - causes, types and elements of earthquakes, measurement of the earthquake magnitude and the arrangement of seismically active areas on the Earth.
  8. Minerals - Important petrogenic and ore minerals, their chemical composition, internal structure, physical properties and origin;
  9. Igneous rocks - Mineral composition and fabric of important igneous rocks, their distribution and use;
  10. Sedimentary rocks - Surface decomposition, transport, sedimentation and diagenesis. Composition and fabric of sedimentary rocks, distribution and use;
  11. Metamorphic rocks - Types and factors of metamorphism, mineral composition and fabric of metamorphic rocks, origin, distribution and use;
  12. Geological maps - Definition and classification of geological maps. Basic geological map and its interpretation. Specialist geological maps: engineering-geological, hydrogeological, seismic, metalogenetic maps.
  13. Basic concepts and principles of classification of mineral raw material deposits (according to genesis and type of useful raw material). Important genetic types of deposits and the manner of their formation. Importance of exploitation and processing of raw materials for the environment;
  14. Impact of geological research on the environment: drilling, excavation, etc.; Impact of exploitation of mineral raw materials on the environment;
  15. Paleoecological changes on the planet Earth;

Practical lectures

Macroscopic recognition of the most important petrogenic and ore minerals based on physical properties, their role as constituents of rocks and ore deposits; Identification of rocks - Structure, texture and mineral composition of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, classification, distribution and use; Methods of geological mapping, working with geological compass. Getting acquainted with sheets of basic geological map (OGK), with reference to symbols for displaying geological formations, properties of tectonic fabric, mineral raw material deposits, etc.
