Indication of the importance of decentralized development of the World as a whole, of certain continents, of regional continents of continental dimensions and of some spatial-functional associations, of states and sub-regions, based on the models of urban decentralization. A special emphasis will be on the role of urban regions in the functional organization and polycentric development of the European Union, as well as on the use of this model in the functional networking of Serbian settlements in the network of European metropolitan areas
The outcome of the course will be to enable the student - spatial planner, to perform analysis, assessment and development possibilities of space, on the basis of relevant indicators, and point out the directions of functional networking of urban settlements in the system of European metropolitan areas
Theoretical lectures
Global cities and the global urban network. Paradigm - connecting the transnational urban systems creates the conditions for the development of a global urban network. Global cities as "command points" for directing and creating global economy; Spatial-structural forms of concentration of cities in the World and Europe; Models of urban-based European integration: integrative monocentrism; growing polycentrism; metropolitan monocentrism and integrated polycentrism; Functional-integration areas and multimodal corridors in the function of forming an integral and polycentric urban system of Europe; Determinants and models of European metropolitan regions (EMR); European metropolitan regions as the instruments of European integration and globalization. Methods of determination, hierarchy and nomenclature; Model of Metropolitan European Growth Areas (MEGAs) - Indicators for determining, territorial and demographic size, spatial-functional organization, importance in the euro-integration processes; Subsystems in the euro-metropolitan Development Areas: Potential Urban Strategic Horizons (PUSH) and Polycentric Intergration Areas (PIAs). Methods of allocation and indicators; Importance of the Trans-European Transport Corridor Network (TENs) in the integration of metropolitan regions of Europe; The role of the urban agglomerations and functional-urban regions of Serbia in the European integration processes.
Practical lectures
The aim of the practical teaching is to determine the model of functional urban areas of Serbia (individually and a system of functional urban areas) based on the relevant theoretical settings, models derived from European experiences and relevant indicators. On the basis of this, solutions will be made for their further development.
