The objective of the course is to get acquainted of students with the current practice of spatial planning in Europe today. Students will be familiar with basic documents defining baseline bases, principles and strategies at EU level as well as major regional entities of Europe, and then with spatial plans (spatial development strategies) of EU countries and their regions, as well as strategies for spatial development of countries in Eastern and South East Europe. The tasks of the course are related to parallelism with contemporary experiences of spatial planning in Serbia, as well as recognition of elements that contribute spatially to the integration of Serbia into a wider European framework

The outcome of the course will be comprehensive knowledge of contemporary spatial and strategic planning in Europe, the principles of spatial planning in this area, as well as the possibility of practical application and modification of these policies, for example in Serbia.

Theoretical lectures

European spatial planning policy; basic spatial planning documents in Europe: common determinants of the spatial development strategies of Europe - similarities and differences; the new generation of spatial development strategies in Europe - the main determinants (Lisbon and Gothenburg strategy, Territorial agenda, CEMAT principles, etc.); European politics of polycentrism and networking of major cities of Europe; spatial plans and strategies in the countries of the region - spatial development strategies for countries in transition; interregional and cross-border cooperation and integration as the principle of the spatial development of Europe; regions and their role in spatial planning in Europe; key topics of spatial planning in the countries and regions of Europe; methodology and basic determinants of spatial planning in Europe and Serbia - comparison

Practical lectures

Getting to know basic documents that define the basics and principles of spatial planning in Europe; basic concepts of spatial planning in Europe; a concrete exercise of the application and modification of the principles of European spatial planning policy in the selected regions in Serbia.
