Introduction to the basic characteristics and determinants of the demographic development of Serbia and other Balkan countries. The main goal is to point out the causes and consequences of contemporary demographic trends and to highlight the main problems of demographic development.

Understanding the determinants of demographic development and acquiring knowledge about demographic problems of Serbia in order to apply them in different areas of social practice.

Theoretical lectures

General view on the development of the population of Serbia: Population development until the Second World War; Demographic development in the period after World War II and contemporary trends; Impact of natural and migration components on the population trends; General characteristics of reproduction: changes in the level of birth rate; Fertility, trends and regional aspects; Determinants of fertility in Serbia; Is there a cohort replacement Serbia? Mortality of the population of Serbia, general mortality rate; Changes in mortality by age and gender; Infant mortality; Life expectancy at birth and changes in the model of the cause of mortality. The characteristics of demographic transition in Serbia; Migration: internal and external; Refugees and other war-endangered persons.

Practical lectures

Various demographic variables and their influence on the demographic development of Serbia are examined by using census and vital statistics data and application of different techniques and methods of analysis;

Models and methods for mapping types of population movements are elaborated, spatial differentiation and their causes and consequences; comparative analysis, interpretation of basic demographic development indicators for each of the neighboring countries, trends and estimates for the future.
