Applied Geology (NOPP11O2)

  • Level of study undergraduate studies
  • Teacher: Ph.D. Ivana Carević
  • Subject status: obligatory
  • ECTS: 6
  • Semester: I
  • Number of classes: 2+2

An introduction to the concepts of geology, composition, age and history of the Earth, geotectonic theories, petrogenic and ore minerals, lithospheric rocks and their use, as well as the construction on different terrains.

In addition to gaining basic knowledge of geology, students, as future planners or spatial planning managers, should be able to know the place, role and importance of geological research for the needs of spatial planning, as well as to order and interpret geological studies that form an integral part thereof.

Theoretical lectures

Geology - Basic concepts of geology as a science, study goals and objectives, relationship with other sciences. The shape and size of the Earth, inner material, physical properties and chemical composition of the Earth and lithosphere, geochronology.  Contemporary geotectonic theories - Plate tectonics. Endodinamics of the Earth - Magma movements and volcanism. Types and arrangement of volcanoes on the Earth as a result of geotectonic accommodation, post-vulcanic phenomena. Tectonic movements (epirogenic and orogenic) as a result of the relationship between lithospheric plates. Seismic movements. Exodinamics - Types of exogenous processes. Surface decomposition and transport of materials. Minerals, igneous rocks, sedimentary rocks, metamorphic rocks. Technical properties of rocks - Physical and mechanical properties of rocks. Application of rocks - Rock as technical and architectural stone and raw material for the production of building materials. Groundwater and springs. Engineering-geological conditions for settlement construction - Influence of geological structure, morphological and hydrogeological characteristics of terrain and geodinamic stability on urbanization. Geological maps - Definition and classification of geological maps. Basic geological map and its interpretation; Specialist geological maps.

Practical lectures

Characteristics of petrogenic and ore minerals - Macroscopic recognition of the most important petrogenic and ore minerals based on physical properties, their role as constituents of rocks and ore deposits; Identification of rocks - Structure, texture and mineral composition of igneous, sedimentary and metamorphic rocks, classification, distribution and use. Analysis of geological maps - Methods of geological mapping, working with geological compass. Getting acquainted with certain sheets of basic geological map (OGK), with reference to symbols for displaying geological formations, properties of tectonic fabric, mineral raw material deposits, etc. Application of specialist geological maps.
