Familiarization with the place and significance of demographic research in spatial planning and perception of processes and problems of the demographic development of Serbia. Adopting basic knowledge about population systems and demographic analysis techniques and methods. Application of demographic knowledge in spatial planning. Examining the role and significance of the population for a spatial-functional organization and its connection to other elements of the geospatial structure
Mastering the techniques and methods of demographic analysis, understanding the causes and consequences of demographic processes, interpreting the cause-effect connections between the demographic system and the environment, the ability to make population projections of number and age-structure.
Theoretical lectures
The importance of demographic research for spatial planning. Introduction to demography (concept and development) and its place in spatial planning. Sources of population data. Population statistics (census and vital). Population dynamics (meaning and indicators). Components of population growth. Territorial distribution and population density (determinants and indicators). Types of general population movements. The effects of natural and migration components. Natural increase, birth and mortality rates (concepts, indicators, meanings). Differential fertility and mortality. Population fertility measures (general and specific rates). Characteristics of fertility model and fertility determinants. Mortality (general and specific rates); life expectancy; infant mortality; main causes of death. Migration (concept, causes and consequences, demographic aspects). Data sources, basic indicators, methods of migration analysis. Migration typology and selectivity of migrants. Population structural characteristics: Age-gender structure; determinants; analytical indicators; types of age structure; cunctional contingents. Socioeconomic structure of population; Population and socio-economic development; Population according to economic activity; General activity rate, economic dependency coefficient, active population by age and gender. Agricultural population, deagrarization process. Population structure according to education. Ethnic and confessional composition of the population. Population projections. Population policy questions - concept and goals. General demographic trends in Serbia, regional differences and problems of the demographic development (depopulation, demographic aging, population spatial distribution, urbanization).
Practical lectures
Census and vital statistics. Organization of the census in Serbia. Possibility of comparative analysis and analysis of trends depending on administrative-territorial divisions. Calculation of population growth rates, birth rates and fertility rates, mortality rates. Life expectancy and infant mortality rates. Fertility and mortality curve. Vital-statistic method for calculating net migration. Age pyramids and types of age composition. Population activity rates. Ethnic mosaic in Serbia. The average size of households and household income sources. Mathematical and analytical methods of population projections. Mapping and graphic presentation.
