The aim of the course is to introduce students with theoretically based knowledge of relations between human society and environment; to provide students to understand the influence of relevant physical-geographical, demographic, social and economic factors on environment.

The module should enable students to gain knowledge about the role of humans and their activities in shaping and changing environment conditions.

Theoretical lectures

(1-3) Theory and methodology of traditional and contemporary antropogeography; Development of antropogeography – historical background;  Antropogeography in the system of geographic sciences. (4-7) Jovan Cvijić’s concept of anthropogeography; Theoretical background, methodology and scientific significance of Cvijić’s anthropogeographical studies in Balkan Peninsula; Modern development of Serbian anthropogeographical school. (8-9) Concepts of geographical determinism and geographical possibilism. (10-11) Environmental factors (water supply, land, climate etc.) that influenced settlement patterns and population distribution. (12-15) Social-geographic factors of human settlement – historical background. Ethnos as biosocial system. Population and resources (oil, energy, water, food etc).

Practical lectures

Fieldwork methods in anthropogeographic researches. Desk research. Traditional and modern methodological plan for field researches of population origin and settlement development. Application of selected methods (statistical analysis, genetic method, mapping, system approach etc.).
