To improve a student’s writing skills for academic and scientific purposes: essays, term papers, graduation paper, master thesis, doctoral dissertation, research paper (academic paper).
A student acquires and improves his/her ability to express thoughts and ideas in writing; by writing academic texts a student has mastered basic technical and methodological rules of writing; has done successful library research, has learned to critically analyze and evaluate the quality of work of other authors, has planned his/her research and writing; has successfully presented his/her work.
Theoretical lectures
1) Introductory lecture: general conditions for good literacy; 2) Composition of a written text; 3) Types of written texts: argumentative, study and monograph, article, report, lecture or speech, essay; 4) Types of academic (scientific) texts: term paper, graduation paper, master thesis, doctoral dissertation, research paper; 5) Writing management: organizing, planning, managing time, learning how to study, using the library, indexes and abstracts, databases, citation search; 6) Forms of writing in natural and social sciences: writing summary, book review, literature overview, constructing bibliographic entries; 7/9) Tasks for students: writing various forms of essays, selecting themes (topics), organizing essays, developing analysis, writing first draft, balance, public presentation; 10/11) Writing based on research: title, abstract, introduction, literature overview, research methods, presentation of results, summary (conclusions), reference list, appendixes; 12/13) Writing and presentation; use of citations, in-text referencing, comments, plagiarism; 14/15) Revision: content, clarity, conciseness, spelling, grammatical errors, revision of the work as a whole.
